What’s New at Specialty Growers?

We have added many new plants for 2018! Whether you garden in full sun or under the shade of mature trees, you’ll find exciting new varieties to try.  Sunny gardens will be enhanced by adding new varieties of Baptisia (False Indigo) and Buddleia (Butterfly Bush).  The Decadence® series of Baptisia was selected for shorter, more compact habit, along with fascinating colors not previously seen in this genus.  Butterfly Bush has seen a similar revolution in plant habit; the Monarch® and Humdinger® Collections bring us dwarf, heavy-blooming plants with extra-long flower panicles. We’ve added more Hellebores from the double-flowered Wedding Party™ series.  Hellebores are the harbingers of spring, blooming for 6 weeks or more starting in late winter.  These double-flowered varieties create a showy floral display on hardy deer-resistant plants in shade to part shade.  Peony lovers will be happy to add ‘Honey Gold’, a white with yellow crested center, or ‘Many Happy Returns’, a fluffy double bright red, to their collections. Native plants have been improved too.  The star of our native garden last year was a dark-leafed, bicolored False Sunflower, Heliopsis ‘Burning Hearts’.  We sold out fast last year but promise to have a good supply of it, and its new family member Heliopsis ‘Bleeding Hearts’, which has even brighter-colored flowers and black stems.  See a complete list of our new varieties on the next page of this catalog.

We’re Different

We know that you’ll enjoy a unique shopping experience at Specialty Growers.  Explore our many display gardens: perennial beds and borders, along with educational gardens devoted to ornamental grasses, hostas, peonies, and xeric plants.  Stroll through our small but serene woodland garden and our native/wetland garden.  Our latest project is a showy roadside garden on the berm along the front of our property on Golf Club Rd.  We hope you’ll notice it as you drive by.  It changes with every season.

All of the plants we sell are all grown right here, not shipped from other nurseries or produced in other areas of the country. We grow our plants outdoors under natural conditions, and believe that they adapt and establish better in the garden than perennials grown in other environments. Our nursery is laid out in a naturalistic style, utilizing various microclimates to grow plants that are best suited to those conditions.  Stroll through each section of the nursery -- you’re bound to find some unexpected treasures!
