What’s New at Specialty Growers?

Shade gardeners, we have some special plants for you this year!  We are carrying the Proven Winners Shadowland® hostas, which have been trialed extensively and proven to be worthy of the brand.  Choices include:  ‘Autumn Frost’ - a medium size plant with starkly contrasting variegation of frosty blue and cream;  ‘Empress Wu’ – already well-known for its huge size; ‘Hudson Bay’- a stunning large hosta with bright white centers, jetting into apple green and finishing with broad blue-green margins;   ‘Seducer’ – one of the most colorful large hostas available, displaying many shades of green and bright yellow, and ‘Wheee’ – a really fun little hosta with ruffled, almost frilly leaves.  Check out the 2017 Hosta of the Year selection, ‘Brother Stefan’. Once you see our mature plant in the garden with its heavily corrugated puckered leaves, yellow centered with aqua green margins, you’ll want one for your own garden! Among the many new Heuchera intros, we’ve chosen two from the Primo® series: ‘Black Pearl’ and ‘Pretty Pistachio’.  Their names are prefect descriptions!  We’re fond of the orange burnished Heucherellas.  We’re growing ‘Hopscotch’ and ‘Red Rover’ this year, and couldn’t resist the new yellow and red ‘Catching Fire’.  Heuchera and Heucherella develop their best colors in partial shade.

For the sun, we’ve expanded our selection of Baptisia and Buddleia. The trend in False Indigo and Butterfly Bush is toward smaller, more compact varieties.  Look for new colors in the Decadence® and Monarch® series, respectively. We wish we could grow all of the fabulous new Hibiscus varieties on the market, but we simply don’t have room to grow them all!  So we’ve chosen the PW variety ‘Cherry Cheesecake’ and the new dark-foliaged ‘Starry Starry Night’ to round out our selection. Although these plants are big, they are more compact than older varieties and will add a splash of tropical color to your late summer landscape. Monarda, aka Beebalm, has always been a best seller for us.  Their bright colors and tubular flowers attract not only hummingbirds, but butterflies and beneficial insects.  We offer three new mid-sized varieties this year, part of the Sugar Buzz® series from Walter’s Gardens.  Choose from hot pink ‘Bubblegum Blast’, cherry red ‘Cherry Pops’ and magenta-purple ‘Grape Gumball’.  At 20-24” in height, with confined growth habit and mildew resistance, they’ll make vibrant additionsyou’re your sunny gardens. Check out all of our new perennial selections, along with a few new annuals and vegetables, on the next page!
