Spring Open House May 26th 9 am to 5 pm At 1 pm, garden writer Julia Hofley will give a presentation on “Julia’s Favorite Fifty.” |
Join garden writer Julia Hofley as she
showcases 50 of her favorite garden plants! Enjoy the humorous
confessions of a true plant collector who started with a 30 year old
houseplant collection in an apartment, followed by an English garden
of annuals in pots at a condo entrance, and her current endeavors at
Hofley’s Hillside Garden Theatre, a garden in the making with her
husband Eric Hofley. Julia will discuss some of the best perennials
and annuals for Michigan gardens, based on her years of experience
creating unique and colorful garden vignettes. She will offer tips
on creating pleasing plant combinations - the key to developing a
harmonious garden - all while indulging her passion for collecting
plants. |
A former independent garden center manager and buyer for 10 years, Julia Hofley has traveled the U.S., Canada, Europe, Mexico and Asia in search of plants, ironware and giftware and built an extensive pottery collection. She developed the Cabin Fever Lecture Series, bringing national and international garden speakers to large audiences in Michigan. She is a member of the Hardy Plant Society (HPS), North American Rock Garden Society (NARGS), Michigan Regional Lily Society (MRLS), American Conifer Society (ACS) and Garden Writers of America (GWA). If she had more time, she would join more plant associations; she considers membership in these groups to be one of the best ways to learn from experienced plant enthusiasts. Building a collector’s garden for 12 years with her husband has been both a labor of love and a test of endurance as they live in the heart of an active animal browsing community in Michigan and have learned to garden successfully in spite of this. Today, Julia enjoys traveling around the world meeting gardeners and experiencing their gardens with her husband, Eric Hofley, owner and publisher of Michigan Gardener magazine. She shares her experiences and inspiration with her audiences in articles, travelogues and tours which combine her interests in gardening, travel and history.
